Client Advisory Services (CAS) Manager

Full Time

Summary of Responsibilities

The primary responsibility for a firm’s practice rests with the principals. The assignment of managers to engagements enables principals to serve a larger number of clients effectively. Managers must have complete knowledge of the firm’s vision, mission, and values. Managers must maintain and develop expertise in the profession. To make broad decisions in the course of their work, managers must have knowledge of the general economic and political trends or other legislation that could affect the business climate. The salary range is $90,000-$130,000 dependent on skill level and experience.

Managers are the liaison between the principal, the client, and the professional staff, and are generally responsible for all phases of a client advisory service engagement.

The firm serves a number of clients for which certain accounting functions have been outsourced. This may include the management and oversight of payroll, accounts payable and receivable, grant activity, budget development, preparation of accrual financial statements, and others. The CAS manager will be instrumental in helping to manage the client advisory service relationships as well as participate in the firm’s department development.

Experience and Skills

The position requires technical, client service, supervision, marketing, and administrative skills. Good candidates will likely have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
  • CPA license not required, but preferred
  • Proficiency in computer use and accounting software (mainly Sage Intacct, Quickbooks, FloQast, Bill.com)
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll processes
  • Experience preparing financial statements
  • Well-rounded knowledge of accounting principles from prior experience, specifically knowledge of non-profit accounting standards
  • Experience with accounting and reconciling federal grants preferred
  • An ability to communicate clearly and concisely in English
  • An ability to oversee staff and experience reviewing staff work
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • A team player mentality with a positive can-do attitude
  • A client-centric approach to all matters
  • Experience working in a paperless environment strongly preferred

Essential Functions

  • Maintains steady contact with clients throughout the year, which involves a thorough knowledge of the client and all facets of the client’s business rather than mere routine attendance to immediate problems.
  • Reviews the engagement letter and any subsequent modifications for approval by a principal, answers any questions the client may have so there is a complete understanding of the nature and terms of an assignment, including an estimate of fees, and sees that the engagement letter is signed by the client and returned before the start of the engagement.
  • Makes staff assignments, making certain they are appropriate; since this is a continuing duty, the manager must be fully familiar with the qualifications of all staff members.
  • Follows the progress of the work during an engagement in relation to budgeted time and scheduled dates of completion, spending as much time as possible with the client’s management group, and periodically reviewing the working papers as the job progresses. Determines whether all phases of the client advisory service engagements are being carried out properly and in the best sequence. Anticipates the problem areas and questions that might arise.
  • Keeps the principal informed of all important developments in the work, analyzes the major problems that occur, and recommends solutions.
  • Resolves problems with the principal’s approval
  • May deal directly with the client’s attorney or brokers, taxing authority agents, external auditors, and other third parties.
  • Supervises the preparation of compliance reports and tax/information returns in a manner similar to that discussed above.
  • Prepares and participates in the staff performance evaluation and discusses them with staff members.
  • Promotes the most efficient operation of the firm by planning engagements and managing professional personnel. Should work to develop a responsible and trained staff by assisting in recruiting, developing training aids, and acting as an instructor in professional development programs.
  • May function as the client’s Finance Director, Controller, or Chief Financial Officer as appropriate.
  • Participates in client meetings and financial statement presentations to management, the Finance Committee, and the Board of Directors as needed.
  • Have a solid understanding of the financial reporting process under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and participate in the client’s external audit process.
  • Should make associations to develop new business for the firm and to maintain its professional image in the community. Doing so may include taking an active role in professional, civic, or charitable organizations, delivering talks, and writing articles for publications.
  • Maintains knowledge of general economic and political trends and of possible tax or other legislation that could affect the business climate.

Practice Management and Personnel Development

  • Encompasses the firm’s mission, vision, and values in representing the firm to other employees and the community
  • Provide management over a portfolio of clients and deliver high-quality client advisory service, including preparing and reviewing CAS plans and work
  • Coordinates with other CAS department team members regarding staff training and staff continuing education plans
  • May conduct internal CPE presentations and training
  • May coordinate with other department team members regarding staff scheduling and project assignments
  • Coordinates with other managers and partners to identify and implement department goals
  • Monitors and follows up on staff utilization and productivity. Implement ideas and strategies for ensuring staff and department productivity.
  • Assists in identifying staff resource needs, including participating in the hiring, recruitment, and termination of department staff
  • Participates and conducts employee evaluations and employee mentorship. This may include the recommendation to promote or coach staff as deemed necessary.
  • Coordinates in new staff on-boarding procedures/training
  • Assists in the design and implementation of department policy and procedures (bonus structure, workflow policies, software, technology, etc.)
  • Proactively reviews and analyzes the profitability/efficiency within the department. Assists in identifying growth opportunities.
  • Performs monthly billing and collection follow-up with clients. Communicates with clients regarding additional billing and other billing adjustments.
  • May take leadership roles in professional, business, or community organizations.
  • Be seen as a role model for other professionals.
  • Participating in CAS and other client proposals, including the coordination of written proposals and presentations to prospective clients. Actively identifies business development opportunities.
  • Required to possess exceptional time management and project management skills. This includes the monitoring of current projects to ensure client deadlines are met.
  • Identifying ways to maximize the relationship with clients and deliver value-added services.
  • Integrate best practices and systems into the CAS process
  • On-going evaluation of technical and software resources to maximize staff proficiency and efficiency
  • Develops and nurtures a network of business referral sources.
  • Addresses situations before they become crises and develops solutions to avoid recurrence

Required Experience

  • Have a minimum of 8 years in accounting (public or private)
  • Must have managed a team of professionals and performed performance evaluations and supervisory roles for at least 3 years
  • Non-profit accounting experience is a plus, but not required

Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree minimum in accounting
  • CPA license preferred, but not required
  • A minimum of forty hours of continuing professional education is required each year

Tax Staff Accountant

Full Time

We are looking for a staff accountant with a bachelor’s degree in accounting with the pursuit of a CPA license in the near future.  You must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and have a well-rounded knowledge of accounting principles and personal income taxes either through prior work experience or college course work.

Job duties will vary throughout the year, but will primarily consist of preparation of personal tax returns, monthly bookkeeping, and 1099 and property tax preparation. Other accounting work will include working on general ledgers, trial balances, and adjusting entries. In this position, you will be expected to be available to work overtime hours to meet time constraints and client deadlines. You will also be accountable for working within budgets and recognizing separately billable work.

Internship Opportunity

Price Paige & Company has multiple paid internship positions available for the Spring 2023 semester. Internships are available for our Tax, Audit, and Client Advisory Services Departments. Internships will begin in the middle of January to early February. A minimum of 20 hours a week is preferred (days and hours are flexible).

Intern job responsibilities will vary by department. Responsibilities are designed for interns to learn how to apply academic knowledge, prioritize tasks, and learn entry-level accountant duties. Tasks may consist of compiling information, work paper preparation, account balance reconciliations, scanning client data, moving documents into our working database, and trial balance or other data input. Interns will be expected to have a good foundation in Microsoft Office Word and Excel, in addition to learning various other computer applications during the internship. Interns must have strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
